The animation below is just one example of the educational features that can be found on OilSpillPrevention.org, our new website that launched last month. The site is full of information about the oil and natural gas industry’s efforts to meet the nation’s energy needs while maintaining safe and environmentally sound operations. Take a look:
This particular feature illustrates safety and prevention measures associated with 95,000 miles of oil pipelines in the U.S., which are part of a delivery infrastructure that makes it possible for more than 99.9995 percent of the oil produced, refined, stored and/or transported in this country to reach its destination safely without incident.
There’s much more on the site:
- Prevention – Information on equipment, procedures and employee training to keep spills from occurring. For example, the equipment section contains detailed information on wells, ships, pipelines, refineries and more.
- Preparedness – Every individual and business involved in oil development is responsible for specific emergency planning and response. There’s also information on the resources available in the unlikely event of a spill, as well as training and exercises.
- Cleanup - This section highlights the spill response options that may be available depending on whether an incident occurs on land, sea, shoreline, rivers or lakes. Click on the “Toolkit” tab in this section for detailed information on the tools available to the response community.
Industry takes seriously its responsibility to operate safely and to prevent spills, while training and drilling employees on what to do if a spill does occur. From the site:
Industry … invests in practices and technologies that ensure a quick and effective response in the event of a spill. The United States has established one of the world’s most sophisticated and well-coordinated spill response networks by bringing together the resources and expertise of private industry, public agencies, and academia; and, through initiatives such as the Joint Industry Task Force, we’re making sure we learn everything we can from past incidents.
So, explore the site, watch the videos and learn about industry’s commitment to safe and responsible oil and natural gas development. One more animation, this one on tankers:
