We’ve seen this movie before: Anti-natural gas and oil advocates put out a “study” or a “report” linking cancer, asthma, low birth weights and (fill in the blank) to industry operations. Scare headlines follow – with truth, as it so often does, lagging behind.Frequently, the methodologies used in these studies lead to flawed or flimsy conclusions. For example, it’s poor methodology to confuse health effects correlation with causation. Correlation is two things occurring side by side; causation is proving scientifically that one caused the other.

The broad, impactful outlines of the U.S. energy renaissance in a couple of recent data points: In November, U.S. crude oil production reached 10.038 million barrels per day – a level not seen in 50 years – largely with advanced hydraulic fracturing unlocking oil from tight-rock formations; the United States is projected to be a net exporter of energy by 2022 in most scenarios studied by the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Strong domestic production will play a major role, EIA says. We’ve arrived at this point – with significant positive implications for American security and economic growth – for a couple of reasons: vast natural gas and oil reserves and an innovative, technologically advanced industry that has been able to safely and responsibly develop those energy reserves to the benefit of American consumers, businesses and manufacturers.

This is especially timely given the possibility trade will come up during tonight’s State of the Union address.

The past week or so we’ve talked a lot about how natural gas and oil help Americans power past the impossible – meeting the challenges of today and building a path to a better future. See API’s 2018 annual report, check out our keynote video and listen to API President and CEO Jack Gerard’s State of American Energy remarks. All point to the positive momentum for our nation provided by secure, abundant energy. Now, how do we keep it going? Gerard, speaking at the U.S. Energy Association’s State of the Energy Industry Forum, focused on three critical points for sustaining America’s energy renaissance.

Protecting wildlife and preserving habitats near industry operations is a big priority for our companies. It takes study and resources, but both objectives are well worth the investment. As members of our communities, we want to see wildlife and their homes sustained for generations to come.
