Highlights from API President and CEO Jack Gerard’s remarks at the 2014 International Oil Spill Conference (IOSC) in Savannah, Ga.:

  • The United States’ rise to energy superpower status, built on surging oil and natural gas production, will demand increased energy infrastructure.
  • Greater demand for energy will spotlight the oil and natural gas industry’s ability to develop reserves, but also how well industry transports and stores the energy it produces.
  • Continuing to add to and improve industry’s ability to prevent and prepare for spills, as well as its response if incidents occur, will be key to sustaining America’s oil and natural gas renaissance.

Oil companies are committing resources in the form of dollars, time and expertise to ensure that these improvements are implemented.

The Interior Department issued two new safety rules today, setting what Secretary Salazar has called the "gold standard" for offshore oil and natural gas development. The new rules, which cover blowout preventers (BOPs), emergency response, well design and training, are part of the administration's response to the Deepwater Horizon accident.

Tomorrow, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar is expected to lay out the administration's energy strategy--including its stance on deepwater offshore drilling--in a speech at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. Observers say it's likely that Sec. Salazar will announce a new interim final rule codifying many of the new offshore requirements aimed at increasing safety and improving environmental practices.

BP today released the results of its own investigation into the Deepwater Horizon accident. It determined that a series of mechanical failures, the misinterpretation of data, and other factors attributable to all of the companies working on the rig led to the explosions, fire and the deaths of 11 offshore workers.
