New York University Stern Business School's CEO Series

Shell Oil Company President John Hofmeister addressed more than 250 students, faculty and alumni of New York University’s (NYU) Stern School of Business for one hour as part of the school’s CEO Series. Held three times a year, the CEO Series brings some of the world's most influential business leaders on campus for candid conversations about their work and their industries. The activities include a small reception hosted by Dean Thomas Cooley and other NYU Stern representatives, the formal CEO Series interview moderated by a leading journalist and a closing reception with the speakers and attendees.

Dean Thomas Cooley of NYU’s Stern School of Business opened the event by introducing Mr. Hofmeister and Vijay Vaitheeswaran, an executive-in-residence at NYU and a reporter with The Economist. Mr. Vaitheeswaran proceeded to interview Mr. Hofmeiseter, asking approximately 20 questions throughout the duration of the event.

Discussion topics included:

  • Myths associated with current energy landscape
  • Geopolitical issues and the nationalization of energy resources
  • Energy "independence," interdependence and U.S. access policy
  • Technological advances in the energy industry

After approximately 45 minutes of discussion, Mr. Vaitheeswaran opened the floor to questions from the students. Mr. Vaitheeswaran allowed the audience to quickly ask three questions, which were then reiterated by Mr. Vaitheeswaran. This allowed the conversation to commence more smoothly. Questions from the audience ranged from topics including:

  • The debate over peak oil and the role of energy executives in framing the discussion
  • The global oil market’s effect on U.S. policy
  • Shell’s role in fighting global warming and its position on cap-and-trade
  • The future of partnerships between independent oil companies and national oil companies
  • Industry-wide investment in alternative energy solutions

Newsweek Panel Discussion

"Good afternoon. I'm Tony Emerson, I'm managing editor of Newsweek International. I'd like to welcome you all to a very timely Newsweek Executive Forum. I'm thrilled to be here myself. We have a great panel. Newsweek and her new advertising partner API are pleased to present an Issues 2008 Panel Discussion on Globalization Trends and Energy and the Growing Competition for Resources.

Newsweek has committed extensive resources over the last year to covering the environment and energy and obviously will continue to do so for the foreseeable future because energy is going to remain hot for the foreseeable future. Our International Edition published a special issue on the future of energy that was distributed in 2007 at Davos. Last April, Newsweek followed up with a cover on environmental leadership which coincided with our inaugural global environment in leadership conference at Georgetown University. Our keynote speaker there was Arnold Schwarzenegger. You may have noticed him, his picture smiling at you from our cover, as you entered the meeting room today."

Gary R. Heminger: Speech before The Commerce Club of Atlanta - Our Energy Future: A Portfolio Approach

"Good afternoon. It’s a pleasure to be here to share my views on energy for today and tomorrow.

What must we do to insure affordable, reliable supplies of energy for Georgia, for our country, and the world as a whole?

I’m optimistic. The key is to develop a portfolio of resources . . . I’ll be returning to that theme in a moment, along with a discussion of the facts behind my prescription for the future and the critical need to open domestic reserves NOW in order to build American energy security."

Clarence P. Cazalot Jr.: Speech before the Detroit Economic Club - Delivering America's Energy Security

"Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. I want to thank the Detroit Economic Club for this opportunity and to thank you for taking time out of your very busy schedules to be here with us this afternoon. I certainly hope to make it worth your while.

I want to talk to you about a very serious subject... Delivering America’s energy security.

There’s a lot of discussion today about energy independence.

My view is that energy independence is neither possible nor is it desirable. In fact, calling for energy independence creates uncertainty amongst our international trading partners and hinders investment in new international energy supplies.

The real key for us is energy security, which I define as having an adequate, reliable and sustainable supply of energy to meet the needs and aspirations of private citizens, commercial enterprises and public sector functions."

Clarence P. Cazalot at the Port of Tampa

Red Cavaney at the CalTech Executive Forum

I am delighted to be with you this evening. It's great to be back in one of America's premier oil-producing states! How many Californians know that their state ranks third in oil production – and that, for well over a century, California has been a leader in the U.S. oil and natural gas industry? It's doubly nice to be back in Pasadena, having grown up in the neighboring community of Alhambra. I always enjoy returning home to Southern California.

The organizers of tonight's event asked me to give my talk a provocative title. Fittingly, I chose: "It's the Policy, Stupid: Meeting Energy Challenges in the 21st Century." It's a serious title, because we're at a critical time for making energy policy decisions. As I will explain, I take an optimistic view of our ability to ensure energy supplies for future generations of Americans.

For more than 100 years, our companies have been dedicated to the efficient and reliable production of energy for U.S. consumers. It is a role we'll continue to play for generations to come.
